Stage 10
Luchon - Andorra Arcalis
242km
The main stage in the Pyrénées. From a strategic Tour city, Luchon, the pearl of the Pyrénées, and its ancient Roman thermal baths, to Andorre, where the Tour had first stopped in 1994. There will be seven hills before the final climb to Arcalis, a ski resort in the winter. 18 km at 6,3%, including the "Portet d'Aspet," where a stele commemorates the memory of Fabio Casartelli, the "Port d'Envalira," the top of the Tour, at 2407 m, and the "col d'Ordino." The stage's length, 252 km, and the accumulation of three obstacles in the last 75 kilometers will only add to the terrain's severity in making this one of the most trying stages of the 1997 Tour.
