Pau has traditionally marked the entrance to the Pyrénées. This first mountain stage takes the riders higher than 2000 meters with four major hills: the "Soulor" (1474 m), the "Tourmalet" (2114 m), with an 1400 m-rise in 18 kilometers, the "Aspin" (1489 m) and the "Val Louron" (1580 m). It associates three legendary obstacles that were climbed in 1910 for the first time to a more recent climb that was tested in 1991 and is attractive because it is situated in the last 20 kilometers. The new finish in Loudenvielle will bring out the "vallée du Louron," which is attached to its cultural heritage and the protection of nature.
